Export of Non-Metallic Mineral Industries Products Earn $32m

TEHRAN The exports of Non-Metallic Mineral Industries Department of the Industries Ministry earned some 32 million dollars in an eight-month period, ending November 21, said the director general of the department, Abbass Safa-Kish here yesterday. Talking to reporters he also said that some 13.5 million tons of cement were produced in the country in the March 21-November 21 period, showing a five-percent growth compared to the similar period last year.
Safa-Kish told reporters that an annual 11.6 percent growth has been recorded in cement production over the past ten years in the wake efforts to raise capacity of domestic cement plants. One billion dollars has been invested in cement industry in the same period, he added. He said there are plans to produce 23 million tons of cement this year. Of the said figure, three million tons were supposed to be exported but due to certain problems export figure for the first eight months of the year stood at only 200,000 tons, the Iranian official said.
He said that four to five percent of the total cement output is consumed domestically. Elsewhere in his remarks, Safakish said that 114,000 tons of glasswares and 170,000 tons of glass sheets have been produced in the first seven months of the year. He put the country's tile production capacity at 65 million square meters and said that projects are underway which once completed would raise the figure to 85 million square meters in the next two years.
He added that 20 percent of the total output would be exported. Some 35 million square meters of tiles were produced from March 21 to November 21, of which four million square meters worth $12 million, were exported. Some 19,000 tons of chinawares and 33,000 tons of bathroom pieces have been produced in the first eight months of the year, indicating an increases of two and 18 percent respectively over last year.
